Toddler Learning

Most parents are very concerned at the rate their toddler learning ability is maturing. There is no reason to worry. Small children under the age of 3 years old are like sponges. Every day in their lives contains learning moments. They wake up full of energy and ready to go. They don’t know the word “impossible.” They don’t care for the word “no.” They have yet to learn limits and limitations. Peter Pan does fly and the 100 acre forest does exist.Imagination is magical at this time, as toddler learning ability is set free.

Playing is a very important part of your child’s day. It’s a proven fact that all areas of development are enhanced by playing. Different kind of play affects different areas of development. It’s very important to provide variety in play, though this does not have to be an expensive undertaking. Toddlers are not impressed by labels or makers. Pots and pans accompanied by wooden spoons make a fantastic drum set. Finger painting on scrap paper can produce some amazing artwork to decorate your fridge. All the while, your child’s motor skills are being challenged and well tuned. Toddler learning can take flight in such simple and joyful ways.

Toddlers learn by experience. This is where active play comes into consideration. Look around your home to see what’s available. With a little modification, an exploration in adventure can begin! Toddlers like nothing better than to climb. How can they do this safely and satisfy this urge? You can use pillows and cushions, of course. Your own couch cushions can provide hours of play. Or make them yourself for the designer effect. Just pile them up in the floor and let your toddler go. Better yet, get in the floor with him or her for the ultimate toddler learning game. A good old pillow toss can begin to teach your child aim and distance, while reminding you just how much fun they are.

The pillow fights getting a little boring? The next day surprise your toddler with the scarf dance! Again, these are something usually on hand. If not, simply visit the thrift store and pick out the longest and most colorful scarves that are light weight, yet up to a good workout. Let your toddler pick out 2 scarves. Then you pick out 2 scarves and let the dance begin. What a great workout for you and your toddler. Learning timing, rhythm, the joy of music and dance increases the brain chemicals that enhance toddler learning even more.

One thing to remember, materials such as scarves should not be played with unless a responsible adult is supervising. Toddlers do not understand the dangers. Comprehension of such things is very basic, so keep it simple, but introduce consequences of actions when possible, as your toddler’s learning ability will benefit.
